Our Insiders' Article

Villa Flora

For most people, Switzerland is all about mountains, chocolate and yodelers. But for the art connoisseurs, Switzerland is the home of Arthur and Hedy Hahnloser. Between 1905 and 1936, they passionately collected paintings from the most prestigious artists of that time, which they hung in their Swiss mansion, the Villa Flora. Today, the Villa Flora exhibition features 75 paintings of the Hahnloser collection, including works by Bonnard, Manet, Matisse, Renoir, Vallotton, and many more, in the intimacy of the Musée Marmottan Monet.

Highlights

All the paintings featured in the Villa Flora exhibitions are fascinating, but some of them stand out because of their size, composition or their fame. Among these masterpieces is Vallotton’s “La Blanche et la Noire” (the white and the black), Bonnard’s “Le Débarcadère de Cannes” (Cannes’ wharf) and Van Gogh’s “Le Semeur” (the sower). But what makes this exhibition so unique is the combination of all these colors, techniques and intimate stories behind each painting.

History

As a collector’s museum itself, the Musée Marmottan Monet’s aim is not only to highlight the paintings, but also to have you dive into the artistic intimacy of the Hahnloser couple in their Villa Flora home. The layout is a chronological one, starting with their interest in Swiss painters Giacometti and Hodler before looking at the Parisian art scene (Vallotton, Bonnard…). Look carefully: some paintings were even painted at Villa Flora or depict the Hahnloser family.

Conclusion

The Villa Flora exhibition is not to be missed if you are an impressionist art lover. It is also a chance to visit the rest of the Musée Marmottan Monet, which houses many of the Monet’s Nymphéas paintings as well as “Impression, Soleil Levant,” the painting that gave the name to the artistic current. On the top floor, the impressive Berthe Morisot collection is also one of the museum’s highlights.
