Why you will love it?

This is an exhibition you do not want to miss: the most complete retrospective of Jeff Koons’ creations is currently held at the Centre Georges Pompidou. All his major works are exposed: from the most famous ones, such as the Balloon Dog, to the very controversial pornographic pictures of himself and his ex-wife, la Cicciolina. 27 years have gone by since the last Jeff Koons exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, but the work of the most popular contemporary artist in the world still arouses curiosity and admiration. Enjoy! Parisianist.

Our Insiders' Article

Whatever emotion you go through when looking at a Jeff Koons creation, the fact is that it is virtually impossible to remain indifferent. While some might call it a work of genius, others will define it as an imposture, but whichever way, this will not change the fact Jeff Koons is the most popular modern artist in the world. With a perfect sense of how to market his own image and an acute awareness for the art market, he is considered today as Andy Warhol’s sole heir. In both of these masters of contemporary art, there is a fascination for popular culture and a will to incorporate it in their art. Jeff Koons’ work is also characterized by an ongoing search for new materials and constant controversy. So let’s now take a closer look at why this exhibition is a must do.

The exhibition evolves chronologically, showcasing Jeff Koons’ 13 collections, and starts with the INFLATABLES, where the artist used inflatable plastic toys and placed them on mirrors. It is clear from the start that Jeff Koons has always been passionate about pop culture and is the father of a playful new artistic style. Yet the next collection, THE NEW, is more committed as Jeff Koons reflects on the perpetual renewal of the American Dream and its marketing aspect. The beginnings were tough and it is only the third collection, EQUILIBRIUM, that brought him a wider span of attention.

Parisianist Fun Fact: although the retrospective takes place at the Centre Pompidou, the most prestigious modern art museum in France does not have a single Jeff Koons creation in its collection, due to the sky high prices.

The very provocative aspect of the artist is displayed in a rated R room, where works of the MADE IN HEAVEN series are exposed. The pornographic photographs of Jeff Koons with his ex-wife, Italian porn star and politician La Cicciolina have been made to deliver the public from the embarrassment of sexuality. Although this brought a lot of media attention, it is with the series CELEBRATION that Jeff Koons was brought to international fame. The world famous Balloon Dog was created for this series and has become the world’s most expensive modern work of art. This series was created throughout a period of 20 years and was inspired by the traditional holiday or “special day” iconography, such as a heart for Saint Valentine’s Day.

Go find out for yourself, but truth be told, you will certainly not leave the Centre Pompidou with a feeling of indifference. This is because all of Jeff Koon’s creations reflect on the world we live in today. Throughout the years, he has never stopped questioning the codes of our society and art. This exhibition is a perfect and unique opportunity to discover or better understand the eclectic work of the most famous contemporary artist.

Parisianist Info: The Centre Pompidou is not the only place where you can admire Jeff Koon’s art. During the time of the exhibition, a replica of the Popeye statue will be exposed at the BHV, and the famous Jeff Koons bags will be exceptionally re-edited by H&M and sold in Paris.
