Our Insiders' Article

Masters of sculpture

This exhibit follows the works of artists from specific regions of the Ivory Coast of Western Africa. It brings to light the true identities of various cultures from the area that have only previously been recognized as a collective unit, giving meaning and character to each style of sculpture. The pleasing display is divided into four main parts: the first and third highlight specific artists and cultures, the second presents various other crafts within the region, and the fourth exhibits the works of contemporary artists from the Ivory Coast.

Masks and sculptures

The biggest part of this exhibition is an extensive tour through the regions of the Ivory Coast. It emphasizes how each culture or artist and their specific geography has a signature style. Highlights include the first Ivory Coast artists whose works have all been identified as his own, Kuakudili, the sculptures of the Belewale and Nyor Diaplé cultures, and Sabu Bi Boti, a Guro sculptor who is still alive.

Various crafts

One entire room is dedicated to showing the profound level of different skills possessed by the cultures of the Ivory Coast. The different crafts demonstrated include wood carving (of course important to the sculpting of masks and figures), pottery, weaving, gold plating, and bronze work. This room stood out to accentuate the diversity of skills and crafts that these resourceful cultures have been capable of producing for years.

Contemporary

At the end of the exhibition, you will find a room dedicated to four different contemporary artists from the Ivory Coast. Each work notably differs from the other, but they create an unforgettable dynamic that brings attention to the self-value of each artist in relation to their homeland.

Conclusion

An in-depth exhibition such as this can be intimidating to those who are not wholehearted art enthusiasts. This is recommended for those who appreciate art in all its forms and are not looking for the classics. The wonderful space of the Musée du Quai Branly has put together an aesthetically pleasing display of the finest works from the Ivory Coast that can be enjoyed by any fan of worldly art and culture.
