Our Insiders' Article

Invention / Design

Design is an essential part of the product. It is almost as important (if not more) than the basic utility of the product itself. The exhibition Invention / Design at the Arts and Crafts Museum shows how design has influenced old inventions. With over 100 objects, it highlights the transformation and influence of design though 4 themes: The Essential, Curiosity, the Context and Boldness.

Essential & Curiosity

Essential: Some designs focus on keeping the product simple. Erasing the superfluous, designers draw “with an eraser” to keep the object in its purest form. Here, you will see how a simple propeller influenced the designers of the Dyson ventilator.

Curiosity is a designer’s best friend, as it has enabled them to go beyond standard borders. In this section, you will see for example how clothing has inspired the design of luminaries.

Context & Boldness

Some designers have been inspired by old inventions and have adapted them to a specific context. Massoud Hassani, for example, developed a giant mine detonator to intervene in mined regions around the world.

It has taken a lot of boldness from designers to imagine that they could change the world, yet, with objects like the Walkman or modern drones, they have. Some of the objects featured in the Invention / Design exhibition highlight this particular aspect.

Conclusion

Although Invention / Design is a very interesting and well-presented exhibition, it might not be suitable for everyone. The stages of evolution of some objects are fascinating (like the computer mouse, from its first heavy design to the wireless uncluttered item of today), but this exhibition, just like the Arts and Crafts Museum itself, is more for the true amateurs inventions and the history of design.
