Our Insiders' Article

INTRODUCTION

Garry Winogrand is an American photographer who was born in 1928 in New York. At the age of 22 he took a photography course with Alexei Brodovitch who later became his mentor. While New York remained Winogrand's principal source of inspiration, he traversed the United States throughout his lifetime, going from Los Angeles to Chicago, passing by San Francisco, Dallas, Colorado and finally Ohio. He is considered one of the masters of American “street photography”.

LAYOUT

The exhibit is organized into three parts. In the first room, New York from the 1950s to the 1970s takes center stage. Another room presents the photos from Winogrand's years of foreign travel. The final room shows off what are considered to be Winogrand's most powerful photos. During his travels, the artist developed an eye for realism that is apparent in his work.

HIS WORK

Winogrand and his photos of passersby on the street left a mark on the history of American photography. While he immortalized a few important personalities like president Kennedy, Garry Winogrand's favorite subject was the stranger he passed on the street. This exhibit displays some beautiful candid individual portraits as well as large collections such as one from President Nixon's political campaign. His black and white photos work together to tell a history of the United States, and attest to Winogrand's talent for capturing the universal in life's small, fleeting moments.

CONCLUSION

Upon his death at the young age of 56, Winogrand left behind more than 250,000 images that had never been printed. This exhibit showcases a collection of his unedited photos, offering a fresh perspective on the photographer's work and a chance to explore the 60's as they were lived out in the States.
