Our Insiders' Article

David Bowie Is

The exhibition David Bowie Is, the first large exhibition in the new Philharmonie de Paris, deals with the character of David Bowie, his creative process, and his different artistic phases. Everyone knows at least one song by David Bowie, but what were the influences and driving forces behind his outlandish creativity? How did he become the pioneer of pop music adored by millions of fans? It is through numerous outfits, photos, videos, and documents that you will penetrate the world of this artist who did it all.

The Music

There are only a handful of musicians to whom we can attribute this many talents and qualities. Born David Robert Jones in January of 1947, the man went by several nicknames throughout his career (Ziggy Stardust, Aladin Sane, Halloween Jack and…David Bowie) and touched on almost every style of music: glam rock, funk, soul, electro. Fascinated by the eccentric and the theatrical, Bowie shifted his identity little by little so as to become, himself, the spectacle, often provocative, sometimes even censored. These are traits about the artist you will hear through the audio guides that automatically progress depending on at what you are currently looking.

The Artist

The avant-garde outfits, the lyrics from Bowie’s greatest hits scribbled on rough paper, and psychedelic album covers: you can’t expect anything less of the David Bowie Is exhibition. But are you familiar with David Bowie the actor, having acted in more than 20 movies, or David Bowie the painter, whose art helped him overcome his drug problems? Thanks to the screenings and the displayed paintings, you will discover this side of the artist that is often neglected.

Conclusion

The exhibition is sure to be a good time for David Bowie fans. What a treat to take a trip down memory lane in the 70s and 80s through this unique collection of music and objects related to David Bowie. Also a revelation for those who appreciate the artist, as the exhibition focuses heavily on his impact on the world of music, theater, and video. However the exhibition itself falls victim to its success, as you will not be the only one who is wonderstruck and fascinated. Getting through the exhibition may end up being a real struggle. The exhibition is therefore not recommended if you are not a particularly avid fan of David Bowie, or if crowds offset you.
