Our Insiders' Article

Moulin Rouge: the most famous of all Parisian cabarets

Who hasn’t heard of the Moulin Rouge? This iconic Parisian cabaret, home of the iconic French Cancan dance, is one of the most photographed monuments in the word.
With its red windmill (“moulin rouge”) standing on top of the cabaret as a homage to the old windmills of the ancient village of Montmartre, the cabaret now welcomes over 630 000 visitors per year.
They all come to enjoy a night full of magic, beauty and sensation.

Show: the home of the French cancan

The Moulin Rouge is undeniably associated with French Cancan, which has been part of the cabaret’s shows since its opening in 1889.
But that’s not all you’ll see… Today’s Féérie show (“enchantment”) is an exploding cocktail of feathered costumes, strass and glitter.
80 talented dancers (60 women and 20 men) take the audience into a world of dreams, with decors changing every 5 minutes. Add 3 acrobatic performances and a few staged animals and these 1:45 hours will be unforgettable.

Dinner: a delicious meal served for 900 guests

Every night, almost 900 people come to enjoy a great meal at the Moulin Rouge in the beautiful Belle Epoque hall. With dimmed red lights and a musical interlude offered by the Moulin Rouge Orchestra, the guests have 2 hours to enjoy fine French cuisine.
There are 2 types of menus (Toulouse-Lautrec and Belle Epoque), as well as an à la carte selection and vegetarian / vegan menus.
Most of the time, you will have to share a table with other people.

History: a cabaret and a concert hall

The Moulin Rouge started as a cabaret when Mr. Oller and Mr. Zidler opened it in 1889.
It later became an ultra-modern nightclub and a concert hall welcoming the most famous French stars (Edith Piaf, Yves Montand, Charles Aznavour etc…). But since 1957, it has been the cabaret we know today.
From 4 female dancers (the Doriss Girls, created by Doris Haug) at the beginning, the Moulin Rouge has now reached a total of 60 dancers performing simultaneously on stage every night.
Two dancers, La Goulue and Mistinguett have even become historical figures.

Conclusion: 125 years and still at the top

One thing is for sure: 630 000 viewers cannot be wrong. So do yourself a favor and treat yourself to an unforgettable experience in one of Paris’ iconic landmarks.
