Our Insiders' Article

AT A GLANCE: LES DEUX MAGOTS HONORS LITTERATURE

In the 1900’s, famous French poets Verlaine and Rimbaud come sit at the terrace of Les Deux Magots and have a drink. Little by little throughout the years, the café tied a bond with the literary world and welcomes the influent writers and philosophers of the time.
In a quest for constant renewal, the café created a literary prize in 1933 called “Le Prix des Deux Magots”, which has awarded many French literary icons over the years.

Parisianist Fun Fact: Other awards exist: the Pelléas prize for music and the Saint-Germain prize (in partnership with Flore and Sonia Rykiel) dedicated to architecture, cinema, theater and fashion

FOOD & DRINKS: MYTHICAL AND TIMELESS

For the sweet tooth, black coffee is served in a pot for €4.40, and the carefully handpicked teas of Damman Frères include Ceylan, Darjeeling and Earl Grey selections.
And why not go for the Tarte Tatin to accompany your drink (€13.50). The breakfast (€24) is also a nice time to go to Les Deux Magots as you watch Paris waking up…
For those who prefer salted dishes, sandwiches and cheeses as well as 3 course meals are served here. You’ll have to spend €50 for a full meal, as the prices are quite high due to the fame and location of the café.

AMBIANCE: TOURISTS AND REGULARS IN SAINT GERMAIN

In this great crossroad of Saint Germain, tourists, regulars and poets come enjoy the terrace of Les Deux Magots. All have heard about the great literary figures that have once sat on the chairs of this iconic café, namely Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Arthur Rimbaud.
The clientele is usually well educated and fancy, and the waiters in black and white serve with dexterity and class old-time meals.

DECOR: “HAPPINESS IS WHEN TIME STOPS”

French writer Gilbert Cesbron’s quote is not totally wrong. When entering Les Deux Magots, time stops.
Originally a silk fabric shop (little ceramic human statues called “magots” would evoke the origin of the fabric, 2 of them - Chinese wisemen – still visible today, hence the name), the place turned into a café in 1884.
Red benches, wooden tables, huge mirrors and great lights turn this old traditional café into a historic wonder.

CONCLUSION: ARTISTS OR JUST CURIOUS PEOPLE

A stop at Les Deux Magots is something that must be done if you are in the neighborhood and if you are not travelling on a tight budget.
A surprising and intriguing, the café is a homage to intellectual excitement. Even today, the café is enjoyed by numerous modern artists, poets, authors and politicians.
