Our Insiders' Article

Built in 1842, the oldest railway station in Paris, Gare Saint Lazare, has recently gone through major renovations. After 3 years of endless construction works, it is now a very trendy place, home to a unique and fancy restaurant called Lazare. In this hall of departures, arrivals, good byes and reunions, Lazare and Eric Frechon offer time. Not time to wait for the departing trains, but time to indulge yourself with the rich flavors of French traditional cuisine.

The menu resembles a newspaper and the listed dishes look like the front titles. The menu changes every 3 weeks to make sure the ingredients vary with their seasonality. It’s also a good way for Chef Eric Fréchon to diversify and be creative. The best seller is the lamb confit with lemon and olives, but chances are it will be replaced by something equally as tasty… The waiters speak English, and will be able to make recommendations, such as which wine would suit your dish perfectly.

Parisianist Fun Fact: the recipe for the desert “Paris-Deauville” is actually Eric Fréchon’s grand mothers’. This brought him to develop the “Grandmother Lunch” every Sunday, where large tables are set and people happily sit next to each other, as if part of the same family.

Monet got inspired by the Saint Lazare railway station. In a cloud of smoke, we can imagine a crowd getting off the train and looking for a place to have a decent meal. Today, everyone can go to Lazare, any time of the day. In the morning, executives having an early start take a moment to enjoy a coffee, while at noon, it is to please the exhausted travelers that the waiters run around. At night, the dim lights illuminate the faces of the calm guests that blissfully enjoy their delicious dinner after a hard day’s work.

Inside the restaurant, a sign shows the arrivals and departures, or rather (sorry for the confusion), the menu of the day. Everyone will find something appealing in the décor of Lazare, such as the open kitchen, the wooden walls and the dim lights. And if you take a closer look, the silverware, china and all the small details will make everyone feel at home. As if your mother or grandmother would suddenly appear in this enchanting place to bring you the missing spoon for you to taste the dessert.

The voice of the SNCF (train company) announcements brings you back to reality. It’s already time to leave. The good thing about Lazare is that you will likely find what you feel like eating, regardless of the moment of the day, be it a simple ham and butter sandwich or the more elaborate meals. And this fine moment is to be shared with a friend, your family or your loved one.
