Our Insiders' Article

A 100 YEAR OLD BAR

La Palette was created in 1913, at the corner of Rue de Seine and what was once a covered passageway. Following a trend that had started with Queen Margot (1552-1615), artists and writers would come live in the area and spend time at the local bars and restaurants.
The covered passageway may not have survived, but La Palette sure did and still offers today the same friendly welcome to locals and visitors whether they are artists or not! In 1984, La Palette was listed as a Historical Monument by the city of Paris, and recent owner David makes sure that the magic of this iconic bar will live on.

DRINKS: WINE, CHEESE AND DRIED MEATS

Although La Palette does serve classic French dishes in the afternoon, it’s mostly a bar, perfect for a drink while visiting Saint Germain neighborhood or a pre or post dinner cocktail.
There is a wide range of French wines, which is the main drink served at La Palette, but you can also get soft drinks, coffee or cocktails (20 classic cocktails on the menu). At night, if you have not eaten but enjoy the bar’s terrace, you can always get a platter of dried meat or cheeses that will perfectly match your wine.

DECOR: A COLLECTION OF PAINTER’S PALETTES HANGING ON THE WALLS

The terrace is probably the main attraction, but when it comes to décor, everything’s happening inside. Since 1960, La Palette has started to collect painter’s palettes that have been offered by local artists.
The walls behind the counter are covered with painter’s palettes, some of them being very original. The ceramics and mirrors date back from the 1920’s and give that extra coziness and warmth to the bar.

CLIENTELE: REGULAR CUSTOMERS ARE TREATED AS VIP CLIENTS

A typical bar with such great history obviously attracts a lot of people. Although traditionally, the clientele was almost exclusively local regular customers, things have changed, as many visitors now stop at La Palette to quench their thirst and enjoy the magic of the bar.
Many French and International stars have enjoyed time in La Palette, such as Charlton Heston, James Coburn, Sophie Marceau and more recently Francis Ford Coppola.
But regular customers are still there, and usually have their preferred seat. Don’t take it the wrong way: if you see an empty seat, but waiters tell you there is no space, you now know why. The regular customer is king!

Parisianist Fun Fact: foreign students back in the 1960-70 now come back with their families. Now that’s what we call regular customers!

AMBIANCE: CONVIVIALITY MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

La Palette is very Parisian, yet very atypical at the same time. The décor and the history might make it magical, but it’s the customers that make it vibrant and friendly. In the Saint Germain neighborhood, La Palette still serves its purpose of being a social network builder.
The staff has been working here for a long time, so everyone knows the waiters. This conviviality makes the difference with other bars. So if you are looking for a real Saint Germain bar, head to Rue de Seine and La Palette will most certainly suit your desire.
