La Closerie des Lilas Paris

La Closerie des Lilas

Chic iconic restaurant

Why you will love it?

Hemingway wrote The Sun Also Rises here and Picasso, Apollinaire, Man Ray, Jean-Paul Sartre and Samuel Beckett turned it into their HQ. La Closerie des Llilas retains the ambiance of old-world Paris with its red leather booths, zinc bar and soft candlelight. It is split into a late-night piano bar, chic restaurant and more lovable (and cheaper) brasserie with a hedged-in pavement terrace.

Our Insiders' Article

At the end of the 19th century, what is now a bar / restaurant was once a post office depot which quickly became a restaurant where the bourgeois would mingle with blue collar workers. Slowly but surely, this venue prized by many artists became an institution. Today, la Closerie des Lila’s notoriety is a fact, and to preserve its historic value, it gives out its own special literature award to the best contemporary writer. You might or might not be a writer, but you are surely welcome to enjoy this great venue.

Since the 1920’s, the dishes served at La Closerie des Lilas have almost never changed, be it the pike or the beef filet called Hemingway. The particularity here is that different prices are charged depending on where you sit: if you prefer sitting at the counter, a meal will cost around 55 Euros, but should you choose the restaurant, the price will soar to a staggering 105 Euros (not the same dishes though). You will be able to choose a nice wine to go with your meal from their extensive wine menu, but cocktails or champagne are available too.

Dimed lights and leather armchairs, along with the sound of live piano after 7pm creates a magical and intimate ambiance. This, as well as the food and drinks, is what attracts many artists and political figures of Paris.

Parisianist Fun Fact: In the 1980s, writer Jean Edern Hallier organized a fake kidnapping in front of La Closerie des Lilas. This lampoonist, as well as the restaurant, made it on the front page of all the Parisian newspapers!

La Closerie des Lilas holds a peculiar Parisian charm drawing within its walls a great deal of regular customers, Parisians driven by curiosity or international visitors wanting to live the experience. The waiters are very French, but they all speak English (at least), so do not hesitate to ask for their help should you be in need of suggestions. The menu is available in English.

The bar, the historical part of the venue, is now surrounded by the beautifully decorated restaurant, with its red chairs, round tables and woodwork. The décor has the customers dive back in the early 20th century, with old cabins, a zinc bar and candlelit tables. Outside, the terrace is the perfect way to enjoy the sunny days of summer.

This out of the ordinary café is an integral part of the many curiosities the French capital has to offer. Businessmen, artists, tourists and regular customers all gather here to relive the “Belle Epoque”. People come and go as time goes by, but La Closerie des Lilas truly lives on.
