Our Insiders' Article

The Palais Garnier (or Opera Garnier) opened its doors on the 5th of January 1875 and it is still today one of the most beautiful monuments in Paris.
136 years later (in 2011), after a painstaking process that took more than 4 years, L’Opéra Restaurant finally opened its doors, making it the first restaurant ever to open inside the opera.
The restaurant is located where the stagecoaches entered and would drop off the people attending opera representations in the 19th century.

Parisianist Fun Fact: to set up a restaurant in a historical building takes a lot of patience, perseverance and energy. Mr. Blanc, the owner of L’Opéra Restaurant, did extensive research to convince the hesitant conservative authorities to open the restaurant. Unknown to all and rediscovered thanks to his research, it appeared that Charles Garnier himself had in fact planned a restaurant in his original architectural plans

Stéphane Bidi is a discreet but very talented chef that has spent time with starred chefs in famous restaurants such as le Crillon and le George V before embarking on this new and daring adventure at l’Opéra Restaurant.
The chef signs a menu where French classics are revisited with Bidi’s own ideas, where classic and modern collide. It is a treat not only for the mouth, but also for the eyes.
Presented in the way of a classic opera, with 3 acts (act I = starters, act II = main course, act III deserts) the menu lists best-sellers such as the cod or the chicken as well as mouthwatering deserts.

Parisianist Tip: Breakfast is served every day from 7am to 11am. Arriving between 7 and 9am is the perfect moment to see Paris waking up and getting ready for work.

There are 3 different ambiances in L’Opéra Restaurant depending on where you sit. Outside, the large terrace is very welcoming, especially on a nice summer evening.
Separated from the traffic by large hedge, you can either eat on the terrace or just relax in an area especially designed to have a drink.
The basement level indoors is a friendly and cozy restaurant and the mezzanine is used as a bar where the ambiance is lively and fun once the sun sets. Professional and friendly waiters enhance the overall feel-good atmosphere.

More than the décor, it is the architecture and design of L’Opéra Restaurant that remains the true highlight. Architect Odile Decq has designed a restaurant with a phantom-like mezzanine that perfectly matches with the classic structure of the Opera.
For those that like modern-versus-classic venues, this is truly one of the best places to be. The red and white trendy colors of the mezzanine complement the magnificent stone carvings of the historical building, and the large plate glass windows naturally illuminate the large space.

If Charles Garnier would still be alive today, he would have undoubtedly approved what L’Opéra Restaurant’s team has created. Great food in an absolutely stunning décor, where classic meets modern both in the plates and on the walls.
And because that old vs. new theme is so present, it comes as no surprise that the restaurant attracts all kinds of people, from Parisians to visitors of all ages and social horizons. No wonder than every weekend.
