Why you will love it?

Although there are a lot of places in Paris where you can eat decent meat, there aren’t that many places where you can find delicious meat. L’Aller-Retour is all about red meat and red wine, but not just any meat and wine: it’s simply one of the best…

Our Insiders' Article

Owner Olivier had never really planned it, but after spending time at the Barav (the wine bar at the corner of the street) and meeting the owners, they all decided to open a restaurant. Not just any restaurant though: a restaurant where meat and red wine lovers would keep coming back for more. In 2011, l’Aller-Retour opened its doors, becoming the first real meat restaurant in the lively upper Marais area.

The hardest part about a meat restaurant is having over the top suppliers, and this is exactly what l’Aller-Retour sought for. The meat mainly comes from Switzerland, but they also have French, US and Argentinean prime cuts. Some of these delicious dishes are not on the menu, and will be mentioned vocally by the waiter. The most popular dish, which is also Olivier’s favorite, is the Argentinean meat. Try out the Foie Gras as a started and finish with the classic green tea cheesecake or the chocolate cake. Average price is 40€ for a meal.

L’Aller-Retour started with a selection of 15 wines that Olivier had chosen. Throughout the years, Olivier tasted many more wines and when he liked them, he added them to the menu. Today, you can chose from 70 red wines and 4 white wines. If this shouldn’t be enough, you can also buy a bottle of wine at the Barav next door and drink it in the restaurant. It’s all about the taste and quality of the wine (and food) at l’Aller-Retour, which doesn’t mean that the selection is 100% bio or natural.

When entering l’Aller Retour, you will certainly notice the old books placed on shelves here and there, the small sofa located at the entrance. Notice that not one table is alike: a warm and cozy décor that is also found on the upper floor. Olivier and his associates did not really have an idea in mind for the decoration. Instead, they decided to empty their grand-parent’s old town houses and use some elements for the décor. Other items have been bought on flea or antique markets. All these items give the restaurant a great home sweet home atmosphere.

One thing that Olivier demands is great service, and that is why he takes time to teach his staff the basic rules of great service. You might think that this will alter the friendliness of the staff. Not one bit! The staff, a mix of both French and international people, is always friendly and for the foreigner guests in need of menu translations, they will gladly be of service, always with a smile. The clientele is usually a local crowd in their late 30s / early 40s.

If you are in the neighborhood and if you feel like eating meat, l’Aller-Retour is your best bet. But keep in mind that it is quite popular, so book one day in advance (leave a message on the answering machine and they will call you back to confirm the reservation). But if you are more of a fish lover, you can try L’Ilot around the corner, which also belongs to the same owners: it’s fish and white wine there!
