Our Insiders' Article

Intro

Located a stone’s throw away from Rue Saint Anne, also called Japan Town, Kunitoraya stands out from the numerous other Japanese restaurants as it offers real quality Japanese cuisine in the premises of an old intimate French bistro. At Kunitoraya, quality is more important than quantity and the restaurant aims for excellence. Chef Masafumi serves special creative dishes that suit the different moments of the day.

Food

For lunch, there are 3 main menus : the Sushi Menu (€26), the Onigiri Menu (€21) and the Tapas Bento Menu (46€). Of course, à la carte dishes can also be ordered, like the shrimp and seaweed  Komachi (€16) or the shrimp tempuras (€22). All these dishes and menus are come with the famous Udon, the traditional Japanese noodles. At night, there is only one menu (€70). Called the Ryoma menu, Chef Masafumi uses the freshest seasonal ingredients, and includes Udon noodles as well as grilled items, fried items and a choice of 3 starters.

Ambiance

At lunch time, a lot of white collar workers rush to enjoy the delicious menus. On Sundays, between 4 and 6:30pm, a gypsy Jazz guitar duo concert (Tomo Hatano & Michel Randria) takes place in this unusual retro venue. To preserve its authenticity, Kunitoraya employs Japanese staff, who are generally very available and pleasant, but who generally don’t have a very good level of English (and French!)

Decor

The restaurant has kept the traces and the spirit of a Parisian bistro of the 1900’s, with a clock, dimmed lights and old mirrors that tend to visually increase the space. In order to preserve the clientele’s intimacy, the tables are quite far away from each other, but for a family reunion or a business meal, you might want to go up the flight of stairs where the space is more appropriate.

Conclusion

At lunch time, mostly white business people come to Kunitoraya to enjoy the Udon and take a break from the stressful office environment. At night though, the dimed ambiance attracts French and international couples, singles or friends that are curious to know what Chef Nomoto Masafumi has created. So for all the Japanese cuisine amateurs, Kunitoraya is truly a recommended place for those that can afford to pay a bit more…
