Our Insiders' Article

Once upon a time, Parisians craving for some good quality tapas (Spanish finger food) in a cozy atmosphere were bound to keep their desires locked up in an empty drawer, for there were no decent places to get decent tapas! Not until Pierre and Jean decided to open Farago in January 2014… Located in the Cour des Petites Ecuries, a very lively small alley in the 10th arrondissement, Farago (from the Spanish word Fárrago, meaning “jumble”) is everything you would expect from a Spanish tapas bar and more: An easy and tasty choice, decent prices and a great ambiance.

The star of the show is the selection of mouthwatering tapas listed on the menu. A restricted selection if you compare it with other venues, but restricted is good judging by the quality and taste.  The other star is the one chef Fernando Canales has to reward his unique cuisine: he personally created some of Farago’s tapas. The menu is only in French now, but will be translated soon. Just ask the waiters for their recommendations based on your tastes. The best sellers are l’oeuf incroyable (egg with truffle cream), bikini canard (duck tapas) and the “chocolate bombs” (Bombes au Chocolat) for desert will definitely blow your mind!

Concerning the wine, the choice is also quite narrow, but again, it’s better to have a small but good selection rather than a long and poor one. Although any wine here will perfectly accompany your meal, ask the international waiters for their recommendations should you want some fine tuning to your choice. Just like the food, the wines are bought directly from local French or Spanish producers without going through distributors.

It was a miracle to find these premises in the Cour des Petites Ecuries, and a miracle to work with chef Fernando Canales, but miracles come in threes. Jean and Pierre contacted a Hungarian interior design agency and their first draft of Farago’s interior immediately seduced the two owners. Away with the classic yet boring bull head hanging sadly on the wall next to the Spanish flag, Farago takes the Tapas restaurant to a whole new level. Trendy and modern, yet very cozy and warm, Farago is the perfect place to mingle and its open kitchen lets you see how those bite size meals are made.

The Cour des Petites Ecuries and the surroundings are becoming one of the places where things are happening right now. French Parisians in their late 20’s / early 30’s gather here to have a great time and chat over background trendy electro music. And because Farago has had some good reviews in women’s magazines, there is quite an interesting female crowd. As for the staff, it’s mainly international so everyone here speaks English (at least).

A year ago, Jean was not really convinced with the idea to set up a Tapas restaurant, but argument in favour of such a restaurant were continuously brought up. The youth in Paris has had an experience abroad and wants something else than a traditional restaurant. They want something cool, snappy and different. Moreover, shortage of space and price has lead people to go with friends to restaurants instead of inviting friends at home. With these strong elements, Jean eventually was convinced to open Farago with Pierre. Good times are just around the corner”...
