Our Insiders' Article

Introduction

Established in 1965 by a former French expat returning from Argentina, El Palenque stays true to Northern Argentine specialties. Later passed down to his son, El Palenque was one of the first Parisian restaurants to offer Argentine cuisine. Relatively small, this festive restaurant is a dream for those in search of a taste of Argentina.

Food

Vegetarians beware! El Palenque’s serves generous cuts of beef in a traditional Argentine style. The meat is directly imported across the Atlantic and is cooked with charcoal, giving it a special smoky flavor. The special cooking method is the key to the charm of El Palenque’s cuisine, and the rustic presentation on wooden boards doesn’t hurt either. The wine is imported from Chilean and Argentine regions such as Salta, Mendoza and San Juan

Ambiance

This rustic restaurant with its little tables avoids extravagance and large groups. The clientele enjoys the intimate ambiance with Argentine music (tango or otherwise) lilting in the background. This setting allows for a certain proximity with the servers who are often of Argentine origin and, for newcomers, the staff will be sure to give recommendations. Diners may also enjoy relaxing over a drink and should certainly take advantage of the selection of wines.

Decor

El Palenque welcomes you with open arms into its white-walled interior lined with black beams and rustic decorations that call Argentina to mind and that explain the meaning of the restaurant’s name. El Palenque is the place in front of a house where one could station his/her horse while travelling, and therefore seeking shelter and an enjoyable meal in the house. El Palenque makes reference to the warmth of home in the northern Argentine countryside.

Conclusion

After glancing at El Palenque’s menu, it’s easy to see how abundant the choices are for the carnivores. But the meat alone does not do Argentine cuisine proper justice. The famous empanadas de queso with a cheesy center also play an important role on the menu, as well as the Dulce de Leche for desert. Here’s your chance to bathe in Argentine culture as at El Palenque, Argentina is calling.
