Why you will love it?

Chez Prune is one of the best places to spend an evening on the Canal St-Martin. A local hispter favorite, this high ceilings and low lighting traditional café offers reasonably priced wine, cheese and meat platters. During the sunny days and especially during brunch, the terrace is crowded.

Our Insiders' Article

Intro

A bistro, a canal and a neighborhood: three key ingredients that make the popularity of Chez Prune. With an interesting vintage-meets-trendy décor, very friendly waiters and a sunny terrace facing the canal, it’s the perfect place to chill out. No fuss, no nonsense, just time to relax and watch the interesting mix of people walking in and out of the café… your way.

Food & Drinks

“Chez Prune is a bistro, the drinks are very classic” says the owner when talking about Chez Prune. Although it’s not a restaurant per say, there is a lunch menu with 5 changing dishes, including 2 salads, 1 meat and 1 fish dish. The ingredients are fresh, and these €12 to €14 dishes are indicated on the blackboard hanging on the wall. In the evening, the bistro becomes a trendy hipster bar, serving classic drinks and cocktails as well as cheese and delicatessen platters. (Menus are only in French, so please ask the waiters for help)

Ambiance

Those who come to Chez Prune are the ones that animate the everyday life of the neighborhood. In the morning, local doctors, artists and businessmen stop here to take a coffee before starting their day. The quiet and serene ambiance takes a 180° turn in the evening when Chez Prune’s volume rises as the young Parisian hipsters gather loudly in the bar. That’s when the ambiance gets animated and festive… until 2am when the bar closes and everyone goes home after a great night out.

Decor

All the objects gathered here and there are placed randomly in the bar. The owner obviously did not want something uncluttered, so he went to attic sales and second hand markets to search for mismatched articles that matched his personality. That is how he found 1913 tiles, visible in the café. There was no real decoration concept when Chez Prune opened, so everything was based on feeling.

Conclusion

As Chez Prune is very popular, you might not always be able to sit down and enjoy your drink. But that’s not really a bad thing as standing up and mixing with the local crowd is enjoyable. Inside, conversations and laughter are loud as, in the words of the owner, “that is what a bistro really is: a place where one forgets his long day of work and spends some quality time laughing loudly with friends.”
