Who is it for?

Paris for you

Why you will love it?

This “bouillon” (soup kitchen) is always bustling with friendly Parisians and tourists sitting around old wooden tables. If you’re a party of two, don’t be surprised if you end up sitting at the same table as another pair. You’re not intruding though, the others were probably expecting company anyways, because that’s just the way it is here!

Our Insiders' Article

The traditional Parisian "Bouillon"

With the approaching Universal Exposition in 1900 and the birth of the Parisian Metro, construction is booming in the French capital.
Mr. Chartier has therefore the idea to create a cheap restaurant to cater to all the blue collar workers. Open every day, the clientele has since then broaden up. Nowadays, tourists, regular customers, students and Parisians all come to enjoy a good time at Bouillon Chartier.

Traditional French Cuisine

Cheap and delicious is what you want? Well, cheap and delicious is what you get at Bouillon Chartier. Even 1950’s French Actor Fernandel used to be a regular, ordering one of the restaurant’s all-time best seller: the Andouillette Grillée (grilled sausage made of chitterlings).
Or try the grilled pork, also a popular dish. The menu changes every day, with new menus printed on a sheet of paper daily, but it always remains in the purest French tradition. A 3 meal course will add up to less than 20 Euros, and count 10 Euros for a bottle of wine.

Parisianist Tip: For desert, taste the home made whipped cream (crème Chantilly).

Cozy and Friendly

If you are coming on your own, don’t be surprised. Chances are you will be seated in front of a perfect stranger, just like the workers in 1900. The best is to come to Bouillon Chartier with your family, friends or as a couple to fully enjoy this one of a kind restaurant.
The waiters are fast and efficient, and run around the restaurant in haste to satisfy the hungry customers. And when you ask for the bill, the waiter will just add up the numbers the good old fashioned way: using a pen and writing it on the corner of the paper tablecloth.

Parisianist Tip: Most of the waiters speak English, but please note that the menu is only in French.

Decor: an old French Brasserie

A hostess will welcome you upon entering these magnificent premises, where huge mirrors and old lockers still remain from the early 20th century.
These lockers were used by the workers to store their personal napkins. This is the reason why Bouillon Chartier has a soul, says Philippe, the director of the restaurant, and this is truly tangible.

Parisianist Fun Fact: On the left when entering the restaurant, the huge painting attached to the mirrors was painted by Germont, who offered his artwork to the restaurant to pay off his debt.

Conclusion: at all times for all people

There are only a handful of restaurants that can compete with Bouillon Chartier, for its unbeatable value for money, its ambiance and its history.
This very popular restaurant fill up very quickly during lunch and dinner hours, but rest assured, there is a quick turnover and you will be seated in no time. Sit back, relax and enjoy the animation in this historic venue.
