Our Insiders' Article

Back in 1854, the Mariage brothers had one thing in mind: search the world for the finest tea fragrances and have France discover its true essence. With great passion, determination and a selection of the finest sorts, tea slowly became a popular drink. Green, black, red, blue or white tea suddenly broke free of anonymity, and Darjeeling or Marco Polo teas brought Mariage Frères to international fame. Tea is all about relaxation and calm: while reading, writing or simply while doing nothing, observe the blue tea dilute in your cup like Indian ink on a piece of paper

Food & Beverage

Everything has to be authentic for Mariage Frères. Even the names given to the teas found here are those given by the local producers themselves in faraway places. The teas are tasted by experts in the plantations prior to selection. The average price for a tea + pastry combo is €22. In the shop, you can buy all the different varieties of tea, with prices varying between €4 for 100g (common tea) to €400 for 100g (for the very rare sorts, such as the Golden Dragon Tea). As for food, only available in the restaurant, the Chef and the Gastronomic Director team up every day to propose the best to their clients.

Parisianist Fun Fact: Discovery workshops (tea club) take place at Mariage Frères to find out which teas actually fit your personality. Prices vary between €60 and €360 depending on the type of type of workshop and number of participants (individual or in group).

Parisianist Tip: Taste the Etoile Mystérieuse (“Mystery Star”), a mix of cheesecake and raspberry juice served with a frozen blue tea.

The welcome is very pleasant and courteous and Mariage Frères welcomes all kinds of people, from a 15 year old boy buying some tea for his parents to the curious tourist wanting to take a break from a long day’s walk. But one thing is for sure, you need to have the budget to be able to afford Mariage Frères as the quality of the tea and service doesn’t come cheap.

Parisianist Fun Fact: a lot of famous French movie stars are regular customers at Mariage Frères. Director Claude Lellouche takes his tea every day at the Saint Honoré store, and actress Isabelle Adjani likes to come here before shooting a movie.

3 words perfectly describe the decor at Mariage Frères: sober, elegant and intimate. The wooden chairs and tables, dressed in white, evoke a colonial setting. Take the stairs to the left and enter the small tea museum where many gifts of old Japanese producers are piled up: traditional tea boxes in lacquer, iron tea pots etc… Mariage Frères has retraced its past through testimonies of visitors, clients and old rich French families.

All this brings us to a certainty: Mariage Frères is recommended for its calm and peaceful ambiance as well as its delicious tea and pastries. Mariage Frere is a perfect place to be to have a warm cup of tea while reading, exchanging ideas with friends or simply enjoying an intimate and quiet moment with a loved one.

“Tea is a noble drink” (Henri Mariage)
