Our Insiders' Article

In 1887, the statue of Flora, goddess of the flowers and spring, located opposite the Boulevard inspires a young man to open a new café: le Café de Flore. Throughout the years, this sculpture has never ceased to inspire the great literary people of the 20th century. In 1917, the café welcomes the surrealists such as André Breton, soon followed by “la Bande à Prévert”, a group of intellectuals lead by Jacques Prévert, a famous French poet. Other iconic French philosophers, such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir have made it their HQ. After having welcomed the Resistance during WWII, Café de Flore started seeing designers such as Yves Saint Laurent in the 1960’s. All these people have made it one of the most iconic cafés of Paris.

The manager describes the menu as being different from any other typical French Brasserie, but you will find the classic French iconic dishes such as the onion soup or the duck confit. The pastries come from a boulangerie of choice, and salads are fresh and affordable. As for the drinks, the hot chocolate is one of the best sellers, but if you truly want to eat in style, you might want to accompany your food with a glass of the finest French champagnes. Prices of the drinks are high, but remember you are in a legendary place, and this has a price!

There is no music at Café de Flore as the managers want to keep it as a place of exchange. And exchange is what is encouraged with the proximity of all the tables, creating the cozy aspect of the café. This is exactly the type of ambiance that the intellectuals sought for in order to write, think or observe their own society.

Parisianist Tip: Go up on the 1st floor in order to find some real peace and quiet.

The efficient and fast French waiters speak English (at least), so don’t hesitate to ask for help or advice.

The veranda is a friendly place for those who like to drink their coffee while looking at the passersby.  Inside, the red moleskin benches as well as the huge Art Deco mirrors create a unique and pleasant cozy atmostphere. Photos of Brassaï, Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir keep the intellectual spirit of this café alive, along with the annual Prix de Flore (Flore Prize) which rewards the most promising author since 1994.

Parisianist Fun Fact: the winner receives a check of €6,100 as well as his own Pouilly wine glass with his name engraved, a Pouilly wine he/she will be able to drink endlessly for one year at the Café de Flore.

Café de Flore sees many local and international personalities drop by. Politicians, artists, intellectuals, designers, writers all come here to observe, meet and get inspired by the older generations that still haunt the place. This iconic café is recommended for literature lovers, hot chocolate amateurs or simply the curious. The best time to come is in the morning, even if it’s only to witness the animation of Saint Germain. On Saturdays, Café de Flore can be quite crowded and there might be a queue to get seated.
