Moonshiner Paris

Why you will love it?

One of the true speakeasy bars in Paris. Don’t look for a sign saying Moonshiner, but rather a pizzeria by the name of Da Vito. Only the people in the know will enter the walk in cooler at the back of the restaurant to access the real 1920’s decorated cocktail bar… Enjoy! Parisianist.

Our Insiders' Article

Chicago in the 1920’s… The Prohibition is running full swing as the police try to get their hands on the mafia running illegal alcohol businesses. Names like Eliot Ness or Al Capone make the headlines in international newspapers…  Welcome to the world of the Moonshiner, one of the 2 real speakeasy bars in Paris. Everything, from the layout of the bar, the choice of drinks and even the bar’s name is related to the secret world of Prohibition. Let Parisianist shed some light on the secrets of this unique bar located next to the lively Bastille area.

If you don’t know about the Moonshiner, you would never be able to know it exists. Indeed, from the street, all you can see is a typical Italian restaurant called “Da Vito.” You would probably enter the pizzeria if you were dying for a pizza in the evening, but would you seriously aim for the walk in cooler of a random Italian restaurant once inside? Well, that’s exactly what you are supposed to do here if you want to have a taste of the hard stuff! And that was the way is used to be during the Prohibition

The Moonshiner is known for the quality of their cocktails. Following the strict rule of sticking to the speakeasy context, even the cocktails are inspired by that period. Let’s be honest though, that’s quite easy when living in Paris. As alcohol was prohibited at the beginning of the 20th century in the USA, most of the alcohols and liqueurs were secretly imported from Italy and France. So, having French alcoholic beverage is perfectly adapted to the concept of the Moonshiner. One difference though: the price. Cocktails go for 7€  to 14€, with an average price of 10€, a very good deal when compared to similar trendy bars!

A bar could simply not be called a speakeasy bar if it did not have a wide choice of whiskeys. It therefore comes as no surprise to hear that Moonshiner has a choice of 100 fine whiskeys and bourbons, which can be savoured straight or in a refined cocktail mix. The most popular drink is probably the #6 and #7but why not try Moonshiner Manager Marilou’s favorite: the “vieux carré”, the name of the French district in New Orleans, an improved version of the classic Old Fashioned. The menu changes every season though, so look out for new creations!

Da Vita Pizzeria might not be the core of Moonshiner’s business, but the small restaurant serves some very decent pizza. You might want to grab a bite before enjoying the mouthwatering drinks that lay behind the walk in cooler, but should the restaurant be full, it’s good to know that you can have a drink behind, and the staff will call you once a table is free.

Layout: very Prohibition. Drinks: very Prohibition. What do you think the décor will be like? The answer to that would be… very Prohibition! Entering the Moonshiner (the bar) will transport you in the Art Deco years of the 1930’s. Comfortable armchairs, small candle lit tables and vintage wallpaper all recreate the vibe of the early American speakeasy bars. Not to mention the smoking room (to comply with local regulations), which is wide enough to welcome chairs, tables and a vault where the owners keep their finest bottles of whiskey. When ordered, 3 keys are needed to open the vault, and the bottle is taken out! Very secret… very Prohibition!

Parisianist Fun Fact: the owners had a massive log brought to the bar, and the counter and chairs were made out of that single log.

The Moonshiner is definitely not where you will hear Miley Cyrus twerking, the Rolling Stones rocking or Snoop Dogg rapping! When you think Moonshiner, think 1920-1940’s jazz, foxtrot or the sounds of an old brass band. After all, who would want to hear modern music in a speakeasy bar? During the week, the ambiance is very laid back and calm, but on busy Thursday through Friday nights, it can get crowded after 9pm. You can expect a queue at the entrance, but rest assured, the wait will not be more than 20mn long!

You might be wondering where the whole concept came from. The owners of the Moonshine, who have a history of opening successful bars, decided to launch a speakeasy bar with a story: one of Italian immigrants arriving in New York City at the beginning of the 20th century. From this point, Moonshiner became the successful bar it is today. Parisianist Fun Fact: Moonshiners were people that would hide in the woods at night and make the alcohol by the light of the moon during the Prohibition years.

If Moonshiner were a person, who would it be? “Jessica Rabbit” was Marilou’s reply, which fully describes the ambiance and conviviality of the bar. Far away from the violent times of the mobsters back in the days, the Moonshiner is all about spending quality time in a quality venue. There isn’t any dancing happening here, but rather a pleasant background noise of friends saying friendly things or lovers whispering sweet nothings.
