Our Insiders' Article

You are a gamer and have always dreamt of being able to play, yet still have a bit of social life and hang out in a bar? Look no further because the Meltdown is the perfect (and only) address you are looking for in Paris. This “barcraft” (a combination of bar and starcraft, the highly successful video game) first emerged from the imagination of 3 video game amateurs and entrepreneurs in May 2012. As popularity rose, the management decided to close the first bar, and open a bigger one in the heart of Bastille. Here, gamers as well as “non gamers” are welcome to taste the in-house cocktail creations or the good value for money simple dishes for dinner.

Eat & Drink

It may sound very surprising, but even the hard core games like to have a drink and eat! The Meltdown have their very own cocktail creations, and Elenor, the bar manager, recommends the First Blood although her personal favorite would be the Kerrigan. All cocktails come at a very friendly price, and so does the food. You’ll have to spend 9€ for a very decent burger + French fries.

Since originally, the bar was inspired by one of the all-time bestselling video games StarCraft, the decor had to have that certain post-apocalyptic touch. Meltdown is located underground so it is quite dark. Bolts and grey concrete are, for the most part, what you will see in this uncluttered bar, while arcade stations, PC’s and TV screens fill up the room.

The screens on the walls are not there for watching soccer/ football games… unless it’s a soccer / football video game! Every Saturday, the Meltdown teams up with O’Gaming T.V. (the leader of E-sports in France) to organize video game competitions. These competitions are broadcasted in the bar, but also on the internet, along with professional commentaries. Eleonor says that if the bar were a person, it would be the main character in the video game Fallout. That says it all… for the people in the know.

It comes as no surprise that the great majority of the customers here are gamers. But the very unique décor and “purpose” of the bar makes it interesting for all the non-gamers that want to see the very talented E-sports players in action. That said, if you truly hate video games and screens, there are plenty of other bars in Bastille, but should you want to see something new and very original, get a nice cocktail at the bar and enjoy your time at the Meltdown
