Our Insiders' Article

More than a cocktail bar, the Experimental Cocktail Club is a legend. Indeed, when it opened in 2007, it truly revolutionized the bar industry in Paris and paved the way for the cocktail bar boom 5 years later. Most of the owners of the newer cocktail bars have previously worked at the Experimental Cocktail Club. If it weren’t for the ECC, Paris would probably not be the up and coming cocktail bar city it is today.

Let’s now take a closer look at the fascinating history of the Experimental Cocktail Club. The success story starts off with 3 young French men sharing an apartment in Montreal. After spending several years in Canada and traveling across the United States, they decide to return to Paris and create the first ever speak easy bar in Paris. No advertisement, only word of mouth is used to promote this new trendy bar located in a very low key neighborhood. Soon, all the people in the know start wondering what is behind the dark curtains and discover high quality cocktails at affordable prices… Not only has the ECC launched the cocktail bar phenomenon in Paris, it has also changed the reputation of the neighborhood, from bad to best.

Since 2007, 3 different people have managed the Experimental Cocktail Club, each of them bringing their own touch and preferences. It started with Tequila and Mezcal, then with a wide variety of rum. Today’s French/Polish manager Gwladys, who has been working for the Experimental Cocktail Club since summer 2008, has also brought her ideas and French Touch. She prefers working with small local producers directly, making sure that the products meet her standards in terms of freshness and taste. As for the kinds of alcohols, she likes to use the old “that’s what my grandma used to drink” liqueurs and spirits. That’s why most of the cocktails here are original and not very sweet. And to keep on surprising even the finest connoisseurs, the menu is changed 3 to 4 times a year.

When it opened, the first people that came to the Experimental Cocktail Club were Americans who were happy to finally find a decent cocktail bar in Paris, just like home. Today, 60% of the clients are international, mostly from New York. During the week, 35 year old men in 3 piece suits come to the ECC for business meetings while the cocktail geeks challenge the experienced bartenders. Fridays and Saturdays attract a different crowd: younger fashionable hipsters come flirt with gorgeous women. Since a crowd attracts a crowd, you will have to wait in line before entering the ECC on busy nights!

When it comes to music, the DJ adapts it to the mood of the evening. Tuesday through Saturday, the DJ will start off by playing American jazz or blues tunes, but as soon as the temperature rises, he will throw in a more up-beat kind of music. One thing is for sure: you won’t hear any house or electro music at the ECC, but on weekends, it is not rare to see people dancing in the crowded space.

I guess the best way to describe the decor of the Experimental Cocktail Club would be to compare it to a 1930’s Chicago speak easy bar. You don’t need to walk through a pizzeria walk-in cooler or a Mexican restaurant to end up in the bar though, but the dimed lights coming from the big chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the black velvet sofa’s and armchairs, the wooden floor and the stone walls make it look like the real deal.

The Experimental Cocktail Club does not serve any food, apart from some grilled almonds, but it is where you have the most off-the-menu orders, implying that the bartenders really know their cocktails. The success story of the Experimental Cocktail Club doesn’t stop here. The 3 owners have since opened many trendy bars in Paris and even a hotel in the heart of today’s up and coming area: Pigalle. But before trying any of these, be sure not to miss the mother of all Parisian cocktail bars.
