Why you will love it?

Picnicking is something that Parisians love to do in summer. When the sun is out and the weather is hot, there is just no beating the lively ambiance of a classic Parisian picnic. Although there are many places where you can unfold a blanket and take out the baguettes and cheese, only a handful of spots are really fantastic: facing the Eiffel Tower, behind the Sacré Coeur, in the gardens of Versailles… So, without further ado, here is the list of the 10 best picnic spots in Paris.

Champ de Mars

The Champ de Mars is the long park facing the Eiffel Tower. Needless to say that from here, you will have the best view on Paris’ iconic monument. Make sure you stay until the sun sets in order to enjoy the beautiful glittering lights on the Eiffel Tower, every hour on the hour for 5 minutes.

Quai de la Tournelle

There are quite a many spots on the banks of the Seine that are perfect for an evening picnic, but the Quai des Tournelles is undoubtedly one of the best. You can’t beat the view on the back of Notre Dame Cathedral from there. The non-stop ballet of boats coming and going on the Seine River is also highly entertaining, especially at sunset.

Parc de la Turlure

Perched on the top of Montmartre hill, right behind the Sacré Coeur basilica is the square Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet, also called the Parc de la Turlure from the windmill that used to lay on these grounds until 1820. This small park now offers an amazing view on the Sacré Coeur, away from the hordes of tourists that come to visit it. Surely the best picnic spot in Montmartre.

When it comes to sheer beauty, nothing compares with the Palace of Versailles. And that goes for a picnic as well. You can either find a spot in the magnificent French gardens right in front of the palace, or find a place next to the Grand Canal (King Louis XIV would have his picnics there in the 17th century). Combine your picnic with a visit to the Palace, the Gardens, and all the other royal places of Versailles and you’ll have a perfect full day outside Paris.

Place des Vosges

The Place des Vosges is one of the most beautiful (if not the most beautiful) square in Paris. It is also the oldest, since it was built in 1612. Many famous people, including author Victor Hugo (“The Hunchback of Notre Dame”), have lived here. The small park is surrounded by beautiful brick and limestone buildings, making it a magical place for an afternoon picnic.

vert galant

The Square du Vert Galant is located at the tip of the Ile de la Cité, one of the 2 islands on the River Seine in Paris. From that point, you will be able to see iconic places such as the Louvre or the love locks bridge (Pont des Arts)… Another perfect area to witness a nice sunset while sipping a glass of rosé!

Buttes Chaumont

What makes the Buttes Chaumont so special is its layout. Hills, artificial lakes, cascades and a high lookout point in the middle make up for its lack of history and surrounding monuments. Located in the north eastern part of Paris, it attracts a young, cool Parisian crowd. A picnic on the hilly slopes of the Buttes Chaumont is a true Parisian experience, away from the classic sightseeing areas.

After an afternoon in the park, head out to Rosa Bonheur for more fun until midnight!

Bois de Boulogne + Vincennes

The Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes are the 2 biggest parks just outside of Paris. Go deep inside the park and you’ll really have the feeling to be picnicking somewhere far any from a busy city. A great area if you want to experience something new. And to make it a romantic picnic, why not have it in a rowing boat in the middle of the lakes?

Canal Saint Martin

Another very Parisian place to be for a picnic is on the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin (and further north the Canal de l'Ourcq). Groups of young people gather around, generally with a guitar or some kind of percussion and enjoy the music, the company, the water and the food. This up and coming Parisian neighborhood is becoming more and more popular for tourists for its typical Parisian ambiance.

Square des Batignolles

There are a lot of small parks in Paris, but if we had to choose one, it would be the Square des Batignolles, for its charm and beauty. Nestled in the quaint Batignolles neighborhood, the Square des Batignolles has green spaces perfect for a family picnic. The pond, with many ducks and geese, will surely entertain the kids!
