Why you will love it?

The Promenade Plantee (panted walkway), commonly called Coulee Verte (green flow) is a surprisingly well-kept secret by locals. This unique and beautiful lined walkway used to be a former railroad track. It was quite recently transformed into an above and below ground garden pathway and is now a perfect place for a stroll from Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes.

Our Insiders' Article

Promenade Plantee

If you are a fan of the New York City High-Line, you are going to love this. Located in the heart of the 12th arrondissement, Promenade Plantee (commonly called the Coulée Verte) is a multi-level of trees, plants and flowers that stretches from Bastille to the eastern limit of Paris, close to the Bois de Vincennes, the biggest Parisian park. The first part of the Promenade Plantee is situated 10m above street level, on top of the Viaduc des Arts, a strip of original arts and crafts boutiques.

Making the Most of It

A lot of Parisians living in this area come here either early in the morning or just before sunset for their daily jogging. You might want to join, but if you prefer taking a quiet stroll, it’s better to avoid these busy periods. Although you will still have a great time going there in winter, the summer and autumn months are the best, since the highlight of the Promenade Plantee are the plants along the pathway. The colors of the trees in autumn is simply amazing.

The beginning of the Promenade Plantee, close to Bastille, is 10m above street level andgives a unique perspective on the surrounding buildings and the street life below.

Jardin de Reuilly (once the site of a train station) is a park that marks the point where the Promenade Plantee decends back to street level. A suspension bridge crosses over the park’s large grass field and playground.

The last part, which is below street level is again very different. Unlike the elevated walkway, the vegetation here looks more natural and wild.

Part of the iconic movie “Before Sunset”, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy was shot on the Promenade Plantee. In the movie, both actors do exactly what any Parisian would do: walk, talk and enjoy the unusual plant-lined walkway. And fall in love… of course.

All the way at the end of the Promenade Plantee (after passing through several tunnels), a spiral staircase leads back up to civilization. From here, head right (south) to access the beautiful Bois de Vincennes now only a 10 minute walk away!

Up until 1969, a single railroad track used to link the former Bastille railway station (destroyed and replaced by the Opera Bastille) to the outskirts of Paris. Yes! Believe it or not, but trains once rode this lovely 5km promenade. The Viaduc des Arts below was built in 1859 to support the tracks and now houses fine local craftsmen and boutique stores.

The Promenade Plantee is an ideal walkway for people who want to discover something new and off the beaten track. On a sunny day, the 5km walk from the lively Bastille area to the biggest park in Paris, the Bois de Vincennes, is 30mn of unusual and pleasant discoveries guaranteed!
