Our Insiders' Article

Bois de Vincennes

The Bois de Vincennes (Vincennes Forest) is the biggest park in Paris and represents 10% of the city’s surface. Although it is located just outside of Paris and bears the name of its eastern suburb, Vincennes, it is managed by the city of Paris. With an surface of 9.95km², the Bois de Vincennes not only offers a forest, grass fields and lakes for its visitors, but also many different attractions, such as a botanical garden, a zoo, a hippodrome, sports fields and a children’s farm.

Making the Most of it

The Bois de Vincennes can be divided into 4 main areas:

  • The western area near the Lac Daumesnil
  • The northern part with the Park Floral, Paris Zoo and the Chateau de Vincennes,
  • The southern part with the hippodrome and children’s farm
  • The eastern part with the 3 small islands on Lac des Minimes

Most roads inside the Bois de Vincennes are exclusively for pedestrians and bicycles. But there are still quite a lot of asphalt roads. Many public bus stops are found along these roads, which offers easy access to each part of the park.

Around Lac Daumesnil (Daumesnil Lake) and the 3 small islands is where locals enjoy picnicking, reading, jogging or relaxing. A romantic ride on a rowboat is never a dull moment (12€ per hour + 10€ deposit / 10AM to 7PM from March to November).

The Chateau de Vincennes, the largest medieval castle still standing in France is a great cultural highlight while the botanical garden Parc Floral is perfect for kids. Another kid’s favorite is the newly opened Paris Zoo.

To the south of the park, opposite the big hippodrome is another highlight loved by kids: the children’s farm “Ferme Georges-Ville,” with cows, pigs, rabbits, sheep and goats (free / open weekend afternoons only).

Set in the western part of the Bois de Vincennes, not far away from for the Lac Daumesnil, the amusement park Foire du Trônedraws many visitors in the spring. It’s the perfect area if you and your children like high adrenaline rides.

The grounds of Bois de Vincennes being inappropriate for agriculture, the forest was kept as a royal hunting ground. Yet in the early 13th century, King Philippe Auguste had several royal buildings erected, including parts of the Chateau de Vincennes. Abandoned in the 18th century, it became a public park.

Used for military purposes during the French Revolution (1789-1799), parts of the woods were cleared. This lead to the restructuration of the Bois de Vincennes by Napoleon III in the middle of the 19th century. Artificial lakes and streams, as well as large grass fields and English gardens were created.

The Bois de Vincennes is a great place to be if you have already seen Paris’ main attractions and want to find a bit of nature without leaving the city. Its highlights and activities are perfect for everyone, be it lovers, families with small children or a group of friends.

There are 2 recommended restaurants inside the Bois de Vincennes: Chalet des Iles on the island of Lac Daumesnil and Chalet de la Porte Jaune on the small island of Lac des Minimes.
