Our Insiders' Article

The wax Museum of Paris

The Musée Grévin is the best way to rub shoulders with some of the top French and International celebrities, all in one place.
Since 1882, the Musée Grévin has been creating wax doubles of the most famous people from around the world, with a focus on French celebrities.
A visit to the Musée Grévin is therefore the perfect way to get to know more about iconic political, artistic, scientific or historical figures, all that in a beautiful 19th century building.

Parisianist Fun Fact: The Musée Grévin has recently expanded internationally: The Musée Grévin Montreal (Canada) opened in April 2013 and the Musée Grévin Prague (Czech Republic) one year later.

3 floors of discovery and fun

The Musée Grévin has existed for more than 130 years now, and although the wax statues have changed throughout the years, the spirit, architecture and decoration still refer to the Belle Epoque of the turn of the 20th century.
The Grand Marble Staircase will lead you to the “Palais des Mirages” (Mirage Palace), a spectacular 8 minute sound and light show. On the 1st floor, you will also be able to visit the Old Italian Style Theater build in 1900.
The visit then takes you to the ground floor where you will wander through different ambiances (political meeting, Parisian restaurant etc.), always in the company of wax statues placed here and there. Go down the stairs again and you will find all the historical figures.
Your last steps in the Musée Grévin will take you through the Dome and the Hall of Columns, 2 magnificent areas built in 1882.

French celebrities

Most of the Musée Grévin’s wax statues are replicas of French celebrities. But there are quite a lot of international celebrities as well, including political figures (Obama, Poutine, Gandhi, Queen Elisabeth), Hollywood stars (Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney…) or music stars (Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Phil Collins, Ray Charles…).
The cartoon characters like Scrat from Ice Age will make you smile, while historical characters such as the kings of France, Leonardo DaVinci or Nostradamus, will take you on a journey through History.

Parisianist Fun Fact: In the scene of the assassination of Marat (a major event during the French Revolution in 1793), the bathtub exposed at Musée Grévin is the real bathtub where Marat was stabbed to death while bathing. It was bought by the Musée Grévin in 1886.

Perfect wax doubles

Between the Dome and the Hall of Columns, a small staircase leads to a tiny hidden room where all the steps in the making of a wax statue are explained.
You will understand how long it takes to create a Michael Jackson or a George Clooney wax double, how many hairs are needed and how the realistic eyes are created.
Another detail: the Musée Grévin is highly interactive. You can approach the statues freely and touch them (unless otherwise stated). In certain areas, there are costumes you can wear for your photo shoot, just like some royal accessories in the King of France gallery.

Parisianist Fun Fact: if you think all the people in the 16th century were small, think again and go pay King François 1er a visit. He measured 1.99m (6.5ft), whereas the average height was 1.60m (5.2) back in the day!

Perfect for families

The Musée Grévin is perfect for a family outing. The fun and interactive aspect will surely please the children while adults will be able to witness the incredible precision behind each wax statue and gaze at the wonderful architectural highlights: the Marble Staircase, the Italian Style Theater, The Dome and the Hall of Columns.
In order to keep the museum up to date, there are a few new statues that are inaugurated each year, and the layout is constantly changed.
These new celebrities are chosen by the Grévin Academy, which is composed of journalists and TV hosts.

Parisianist Fun Fact:  Arthur Meyer was himself a journalist before creating the Musée Grévin in 1882. He joined forces with Alfred Grévin, a sculptor and illustrator. The 3rd partner was Gabriel Thomas, who took care of the financial side.
