Our Insiders' Article

A museum dedicated to Primitive Arts

Primitive arts were never shown in Parisian museums until 1990, when Jacques Kerchache convinced the Louvre to open a special area dedicated to that kind of art (Pavillon des Sessions, still visible today).
But since 2006, primitive arts have their own museum: the Musee du Quai Branly. About 3,500 artworks are exposed, coming from all parts of the world.

A quiet and cosy museum

The Musee du Quai Branly was designed by world famous architect Jean Nouvel. The ticket booths are outside, set in the lush gardens of the museum.
You’ have to climb up an easy slope while watching a “river of words” flow downhill before you get to the exhibition floor.
Visit the museum anytime on weekdays or at 7 pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (closes at 9pm) for an optimal visit.

Highlights: mask, statues and costumes

In the Musee du Quai Branly you will discover totems and masks from Papua New Guinea, parade costumes from South America and sculptures from African tribes.
Most of the curiosities on display here come from remote villages found in the middle of lush tropical forests and wild areas. Therefore, the display, sounds, and the lights are perfectly thought through to recreate the birthplace of these objects.
Primitive art creations being so sensitive to light, it is quite dark inside the Musee du Quai Branly.

The Collection: a rotating permanent collection and temporary exhibitions

The collection of the Musee du Quai Branly lists approximately 300 000 primitive art objects, but only 3 500 of those are exposed.
Because most of these items are very fragile, they are often replaced, those having been exposed returning to the dark storage rooms of the museum.
The Musee du Quai Branly also organizes temporary exhibitions that are generally held on the two suspended galleries above the main hall.

Conclusion: a contrast between modern and old

The Musee du Quai Branly is only a stone’s throw away from the Eiffel Tower and the contrast between the two buildings is fascinating.
The museum also welcomes the restaurant Les Ombres (access via the garden only, above 60€/person), on the top floor with a beautiful view of the Eiffel Tower. A perfect choice for a romantic gastronomic dinner.
On the ground floor is the Café Branly, overlooking the garden and perfect for a light snack or a drink.
