Why you will love it?

The Hunting and Nature Museum (Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature) is one of the best surprises of Paris. At first, the name can be a bit off-putting, but don’t linger on it. The museum itself surpasses its name and time here is well-spent. The fantastically decorated rooms succeed each other while staging the taxidermied animals, paintings, and fascinating sculptures, all within a warm and convivial ambiance of two magnificently renovated mansions of Le Marais.

Our Insiders' Article

The Museum

Hunting and Nature? We know the name isn’t very enticing--but don’t yawn just yet. The reality of this unique museum surpasses its title, within which you will find uncommon experiences. Adults, like children, don’t have time to be bored… and this museum will prove itself to be far from a waste of time!

Man & Animal

There are two main themes in the Hunting and Nature Museum. The relationship between man and animal (and the evolution of these species) and the role that hunting has played in the shaping of our civilization (a huge source of inspiration for artists). These themes are highlighted thanks to a large number of artifacts: ancient tapestries from the 16th century, trophies, taxidermied animals, and modern and intriguing artistic creations.

Ambiances

Everything has been refurbished in l’Hôtel de Mongelas (a building from the 18th century that doubles as the the entrance of the museum) to transport you outside of Paris into the wild. You will find yourself face to face with a wolf, a deer, an owl, or many other striking creatures. The Trophy Room will most certainly move you. The older Hôtel de Guénégaud links the esthetic of the works on display (paintings, guns, sculptures, and animals) with the beauty of the old mansion built in 1655.

Exhibitions

Le Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature doesn’t stop at its incredible permanent collection. It doubles as a space for temporary exhibitions, showcases of artists, conferences, and other events. There is always something new happening here, for example, particularly during the extended evening hours on Wednesdays. Photos, paintings, or marvelous taxidermies will inevitably attract your attention.

Conclusion

Don't judge a book by its cover!. The name Hunting and Nature Museum might not be the sexiest, but a visit is well worth it! If you’ve had enough of the frantic rhythm of Paris and want to take an original break, this is the perfect place, which also lies in the heart of the Marais. A fun, interesting, fascinating, and pleasurable museum: it’s difficult to do better than that if you’re looking for activities off the beaten path, and better yet, for adults and children!
