Why you will love it?

The Tour Montparnasse (Montparnasse Tower) might be less iconic than the Eiffel Tower or the Moulin Rouge, or less historic than the Arc de Triomphe or the Louvre, but it’s certainly well worth climbing up. The panoramic rooftop terrace, the highest in France is the perfect place to have a 360° view on the French capital, including the Eiffel Tower.

Our Insiders' Article

A great view of Paris

The Tour Montparnasse (Montparnasse Tower) was built in the 1970s. It is the highest office tower inside the boundaries of Paris.
Considered by many as an architectural disaster (talks about bringing it down are still going on), the Tour Montparnasse is nevertheless one of the best places to have a bird’s eye view on Paris and especially on the Eiffel Tower.

Parisianist Fun Fact: according to several sources, the Tour Montparnasse was elected second ugliest monument in the world, right after Boston’s City Hall.

Making the Most of it: rooftop terrace or fine dining

There are two ways to really enjoy the Tour Montparnasse:

Take the fastest elevator in Europe (56 floors in 38 seconds) that will take you to the visitor center, where you will find a souvenir shop, a snack bar and information on the view. Climb up 3 flights of stairs and you’ll find yourself on the rooftop terrace.

You can also decide to have breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Ciel de Paris restaurant on the 56th floor. You’ll experience fine dining with a magnificent view. You can then access visitor center and rooftop terrace from there.

Highlights: the view

Needless to say. The 360° view from the top is beautiful, especially at night. From the rooftop terrace, the capital looks like a miniature city.
Plexiglas panels protect the visitors from the wind, but openings were planned to get some great pictures of the view. At the center of the terrace, a blue rug welcomes those who want to lie down for a while and reach for the sky.

Special Events: get the best views

The Tour Montparnasse is the best place to enjoy 2 annual events:

The Nights of the Stars, in August, where telescopes and other astronomical equipment are set up for everyone to use.

Bastille Day, France’s National Holiday, on the 14th of July, where fireworks are lit from the Eiffel Tower. You won’t have a better view on the fireworks than here!

Conclusion: ideal for postcard pictures

All in all, although the Tour Montparnasse does lack a bit of architectural originality and beauty, the view is definitely a sight to see, even if the price is a little on the expensive side.
So, on a beautiful day, the climb up is worth it for sure. And for those who don’t like the Tour Montparnasse, we would suggest climbing up there as well, as it’s the only place in Paris where you won’t be able to see it!
