Why you will love it?

Sainte Chapelle is certainly one of the most beautiful churches in Paris with magnificent stained-glass windows soaring towards a beautiful vaulted high ceiling. Originally built in the 13th century to house the Holy Relics of the Passion, Sainte Chapelle has been re-popularized in recent years by Dan Brown’s best-selling novel “The Da Vinci Code”. It is definitely a sight to see during your stay in Paris.

Sainte Chapelle: a beautiful "flamboyant" church

Sainte Chapelle is definitely a must see. Located on the island of La Cité and set in the middle of today’s Justice Palace, Sainte Chapelle is considered to be the greatest church of the “flamboyant” architecture kind in the world.
There are 2 floors: the lower chapel, which is quite dark but nicely decorated, and the higher chapel, the true highlight of the monument. Sainte Chapelle was entirely renovated in 2015.

Making the most of it

Visiting Sainte Chapelle between 9:30 and 11AM will generally take you less than an hour of waiting in line. After that, it gets a lot busier!
Since it is located in the Justice Palace premises, you will have to go through security (leave your pocket knife and scissors at the hotel!). The second line is to buy the entry tickets (Museum Pass holders can cut the second queue). The chapel can close when temperatures are below freezing point.

Highlights: stained glass windows and holy passion relics

The highlights of Sainte Chapelle are the very long 13th century stained-glass windows soaring towards a beautiful vaulted ceiling.
Each window depicts a specific religious scene, such as the Exodus, the Passion, the Book of Numbers and the history of the Passion Relics.
The whole church was built to house and protect the Holy Passion Relics (The Holy Crown of Thorns, Nail, Sponge, Lance and a piece of the Holy Cross).

History: a story of clever investing

In 1239, in order to finance the spending of his empire, the Emperor of Constantinople Baldwin II sold his Passion Relics to the French King Louis IX.
The latter was an extremely devout man canonized not long after his death, thus becoming Saint Louis. Sainte Chapelle’s construction started sometime in the early 1240s and was finished in 1248. As many religious buildings, the church was sacked during the French Revolution (1789-1799).
The remaining Relics (Crown and Nail) were then moved to Notre Dame Cathedral where they still are today.

Conclusion: a must do while in Paris

The Holy Passion Relics may not be exhibited there anymore, but the incredible beauty of Sainte Chapelle’s stained-glass windows make it an absolute must see while in Paris.
It is also a great way to discover Saint Louis, the 13th century king who brought so much to France. And for an even more exciting experience, make sure you book your ticket in advance to see a classical concert inside the church in the evening.
