Our Insiders' Article

The Eiffel Tower: The Symbol of Paris

The Eiffel Tower (la Tour Eiffel) was built in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition.
It is 324m (1063 ft) tall, making it the tallest building in Paris which can be seen from just about anywhere in the city.
With over 7 million visitors per year, the Eiffel Tower is the most visited paying monument in the world. The main highlights include the views, the architecture, the history and the lighting at night.

What you will find on the Tower

On the 1st floor, renovated in 2014, you will find the 58 Tour Eiffel restaurant, a souvenir shop, the swaying observatory (the Eiffel Tower moves with the wind/sunlight!) and a fragment of the old staircase that used to go up to the 3rd floor…
The 2nd floor is where you will have the best view of Paris (perfect angle) and can enjoy exquisite French cuisine at the Jules Verne Michelin star rated restaurant.
The top floor is the highest observation deck in Europe (279m). The Champagne Bar and Eiffel Tower’s small apartment are located on the outside upper deck.

History: a landmark since 1889

It took 250 workers 2 years, 2 months and 5 days to finish the Eiffel Tower in time for the 1889 World Expo.
Gustave Eiffel was the owner of the construction company, but the real designers were employees Maurice Keochlin, Emile Nouguier and Stephen Sauvestre. Due to lack of interest after 1900, it was going to be dismantled.
Instead, it was kept for scientific projects and it was not until the birth of mass tourism in 1960 that the Tower regained popularity.

The stories that marked the Eiffel Tower

In 1987 for example, A.J. Hackett performed a non-authorized bungee jump off the 2nd floor.
Taïg Khris jumped from a platform on the 1st floor with his roller skates, setting a new world record in 2010.
Some flew under the Eiffel Tower with small aircrafts, while others went walking on a rope from the Tower to the other side of the river (Trocadéro).
Although no workers were killed during the construction of the Tower, sadly 366 fatal accidents have happened since.

Conclusion: a definite must go

With stunning views, daring architecture and interesting fun facts, discovering and climbing up the Eiffel Tower is a must.
And for more magic, head out there at night when the tower is lit.
Gas lanterns were replaced with electricity in 1900 and today, the Eiffel Tower’s standard yellow lighting, with flashing lights turned on every hour on the hour for 5 minutes from dusk until 1am, enhances its overall beauty.
