French Open

The French open, also known as Roland-Garros, is the international tennis tournament of France. It is held each year between late May and early June, and it’s your perfect chance to get close to the world’s biggest tennis stars such as Federer, Djokovic, Nadal or Murray.

The Roland-Garros tennis stadium is located just a 10 minute walk from metro station Porte d’Auteuil on line 10.

Parisianist Info: book your ticket on Roland Garros’ official website now. It is better to book well in advance!

Best Places

The best place to watch the tennis tournament is to be in the Roland Garros stadium. There is just no beating seeing the best tennis players play live. Don’t forget to bring an umbrella (equally practical against sun or rain). Many pubs in Paris show the matches on their screens, but don’t miss the giant screens under the Eiffel Tower and in front of Hôtel de Ville! For more information, check out our list of the 10 best places to enjoy the French Open.

History

After France’s 4 Musketeers won the Davis Cup in 1925, the French decided to defend the Cup in 1928 in a new tennis stadium. This stadium was named after the World War I pilot Roland Garros, who also happens to be the first pilot to ever cross the Mediterranean Sea (September 1913).  Mr. Garros was killed in battle. The French Open is the only Grand Slam tournament played on clay courts.
