Our Insiders' Article

History

The FIAC is the most prestigious and biggest contemporary art fair in Paris. It will take place between October 22 and 25.

The FIAC 2015 will have 3 main attractions:

  • The historical international fair held at inside the Grand Palais
  • Artworks by famous contemporary artists exposed outside
  • “L’Officielle”, featuring young and promising galleries and artists at the Cité de la Mode et du Design

Grand Palais

This year, 3124 contemporary artists will be represented at the FIAC 2015 through 175 art galleries coming from all over the world. The event takes place under the magnificent glass roof of the Grand Palais. The entrance fee (€35) is expensive, but if you really like contemporary art, the FIAC 2015 is definitely an event you should not miss. This is where all major art collectors and museum directors go shopping!

Beyond the Walls

There are 4 main outdoor projects:

Jardin des Tuileries: 16 different artists, including Ai Wei Wei and David Altmejd will have one of their creations exposed

Jardin des Plantes: (57 Rue Cuvier, 75005 Paris): the works of 13 different artists will be exposed in this beautiful Parisian park

Place Vendôme:  students in art history from the Ecole du Louvre will present the artworks to the general public

Banks of the Seine: Here on this open air itinerary along the Seine River, art history students will present the artworks to the public.

Officielle

Officielle is another contemporary art fair that is held almost at the same time as the FIAC, from October 21 to 25. Held at the Cité de la Mode et du Design (34 Quai d'Austerlitz, 75013 Paris), it is a chance for very young promising artists and galleries to expose their creations to the eyes of the world. You will therefore discover very peculiar and interesting galleries who have gone great lengths to find new talents.

History

Inspired by the Bâle festival, the FIAC was created in 1974 in order to promote contemporary artists, but it is only in 2006 that it permanently settled in the Grand Palais. During the FIAC, the Marcel Duchamp Prize rewards the best French artist, and the La Fayette prize honors a selected gallery by giving it a chance to inaugurate the following year’s FIAC fair.
