Bastille Day

3 iconic events take place each year during Bastille Day:

1. The Champs-Elysées Military Parade kicks off at 10AM in front of the Arc de Triomphe and ends at the Place de la Concorde. It’s a unique chance to see military airplanes, vehicles and troops.

2. The Eiffel Tower Fireworks: They are usually lit at 11PM, from the Eiffel Tower and the Trocadero, and accompanied by music (live or recorded).

3. Fire department balls: Everyone’s invited to these popular parties on the night of July 13. Drinks, DJs or live music and always a lot of fun.

Best of it

1. The Parade: head out to the Champs-Elysées not later than 8:30AM to secure a good spot (anywhere on the avenue). During the event, the metro stations there will be closed.

2. The Fireworks: they are best seen from the top of the Tour Montparnasse or the Champ de Mars, the long park at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Come in the afternoon (with a picnic dinner) to secure a good space.

3. The Ball: the best one is located in the fire station next to the Point Ephémère bar, on the banks of the Canal Saint Martin.

If you don’t like crowds, both the parade and fireworks will be retransmitted on TV.

History

Bastille Day has been France’s National Day since 1880. It refers to a double event: the storming of the Bastille Fortress in 1789 and the official unity of the French Nation in 1790. The storming of the Bastille Fortress (a prison and symbol of the injustice of the French absolute monarchy) marked the start of the French Revolution, which eventually lead to the execution of the king in 1793. Today, Bastille Day marks the start of the summer holidays for many workers…
