AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS: A FRENCH THEATER ADVENTURE

In the mood for adventure? With this stage adaptation of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days, you can take a wild ride without ever having to leave your seat. Join English gentleman Phileas Foggs and his French valet, Passepartout, as they race against the clock in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe, experiencing many an obstacle along the way. Share in their triumphs, their difficulties, and most especially, their laughter, as they undertake this incredible quest.

AN ACCESSIBLE FRENCH COMEDY

In this particular adaptation, directors Sébastien Azzopardi and Sacha Danino transform the famous adventure novel into a hysterical comedy. The play truly fills up the room, introducing colorful scenery and energetic characters into a crazy plot that is sure to engage any audience member. Thanks to the innovative technology of English surtitles developed by Theatre in Paris, you’ll be able to understand the storyline and follow every step of the journey as it unfolds on stage.

THE PLOT

The play follows Fogg and Passepartout as they have an experience of a lifetime. The two adventurers move from train to ship and even to elephant as they travel across the globe, pursued all the while by London police officer, Detective Fix, who is convinced that Fogg is the man behind the robbery of the Bank of England. Passing through Egypt, India, Japan, Hong-Kong, New York and San Francisco, Fogg and Passepartout try to evade this police chase and make it back to London in time to win their bet. Along the way, the duo certainly keeps it interesting, even finding time to rescue an Indian princess. The adventures are seemingly never-ending, but you will experience all of the fun in just an hour and a half!

THE VENUE

The Theatre du Splendid is one of the most iconic Parisian theaters. Built in 1896 during the Belle Epoque, this cafe-theatre was a popular place where music and theatre met, a place where artists such as Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguett made their first appearances. In the 1950s, the theater was transformed into a cinema, but a few decades later, a troupe of French actors - the equivalent to Monty Python in England - restored the building to its original theatrical purpose. Today, the Theatre du Splendid continues to be an epicenter of Parisian theater and comedy, and one that you’ll be glad to have visited!
